Still in exile at Hauteville House, a period when Hugo had numerous international epistolary contacts, he wrote to ? on January 15, 1870, specifying that he did not read English, but that the page had been translated for him. He thanks the addressee warmly.
"Je ne sais pas l'anglais, mais l'on m'a traduit la remarquable page que vous avez bien voulu m'envoyer. Votre appréciation élancée et sympathique m'a vivement touché, et je tiens à vous en remercier par mon cordial serrement de main".
