In his preface, Voltaire praised the outspokenness of the Marquise de Caylus, who, he said, ‘spoke with candour’. This is an important memoir of the Court of Louis XIV by the Marquise de Caylus (1671-1729), niece of Madame de Maintenon, who regarded her as her daughter.
