Full red morocco, double gilt fillet on covers, gilt decorations on covers, smooth spine with grotesque decorations, gilt stippling on edges, gilt edges, Greek-style inner border, blue tabis endpapers (contemporary binding).
Very handsome illustrated edition, with a frontispiece portrait of Boileau after Rigaud and another frontispiece portrait by Saint-Aubin. This edition is usually illustrated with 6 hors-texte figures engraved after Desenne - all present in volume 2. A suite of 6 engravings after Moreau inserted in volume 2 has been added to our copy.
This is the first edition with commentaries by M. Amar that Quérard describes as ‘recommendable’. The latter ‘are not found elsewhere, and are praised by M. Daunou’ (Brunet).
