Full red morocco decorated with wide borders of gilt irons alternating eagle and flowers, central gilt diamond pattern decorated with fleurons and dotted lines, spine decorated with fleurons at the corners and a diamond iron in the centre of the entre-nerfs, title and toms on olive morocco, edges decorated with geometrical motifs, gilt edges (contemporary English binding).
Original edition, second issue.
Charming edition in Latin on ancient medals, rare and sought-after (Cohen 497), with two fleurons, two frontispieces and 324 illustrations (large figures, vignettes and culs-de-lampe), 27 ornate headpieces and 164 initials.
The second edition can be recognised by the medal on page 108 of the second volume where the text ‘CAESAR AUGUSTUS TRIBUN POTEST’ has been corrected - the first edition being written ‘POST EST’.
Light marginal foxing in the volumes, corners slightly rubbed and small loss on the upper head of volume II.
